It’s not uncommon to feel nervous or intimidated when trying something new, especially if it’s a physically demanding workout like kickboxing. For many of us, the fear of failing, being embarrassed, or simply not being good enough can hold us back from reaching our full potential.
But the truth is, everyone starts somewhere, and the key to success is taking that first step– even if it’s uncomfortable. Here are some tips to help you overcome your fears and ease the nerves before your first class:
Take it at your own pace
Rule number 1: don’t compare yourself to others during class. Kickboxing is a challenging workout, and everyone’s body is built and responds differently. Focus on you, listen to your body, and modify an exercise if that’s what’s needed.
Coach Kelly says that Gritbox is not a competition of who can get through the most rounds or who can lift the most during class.
“Gritbox welcomes all individuals from all levels. Remember, it’s you vs. you. If you need to level up and grab a heavier weight, do that. If you need to slow down to figure out the right form and technique, do that. Wherever you are in your journey, we are here to help you along the ride,” Kelly said.
So, whether you are a seasoned kickboxer or just starting out, it’s important to remember that kickboxing is about pushing yourself to be your best, and not about comparing yourself to others.
Bring a friend
Coach Sav recommends taking your first class with a friend! “It can be overwhelming trying something for the first time, so it’s always nice to have someone else to experience it with you,” she said.
Working out with a friend usually provides a source of accountability and encouragement. When you know someone is counting on you, it’s easier to stick to your fitness routine and push yourself harder in class. So, grab your workout buddy and get ready to throw some punches!
Come early
Don’t show up just in time for class to start. Arrive 15 minutes early to put your things away, get your wraps on, and get in the zone. Your coach will walk you through the 6 core strikes we throw during class to get you familiar with these movements and teach you the correct technique!
“Meeting the coach and learning the strikes and layout of class beforehand is a huge help,” Sav said. This is a great opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the class or specific techniques. Showing up early gives you time to get focused and get mentally prepared for the class. Set your goals and get ready to crush ’em.
Put your ego aside
Relax, have fun, and enjoy the workout without feeling the pressure to perform. It will make the workout feel less like a chore!
“Just remember with most new things you might feel silly but you don’t know until you try! So if looking silly or the fear of embarrassing yourself is the only thing holding you back, just know we’ve all been there and you’re not alone,” Sav said.
Don’t waste your energy worrying about how you look, focus on the workout itself. By letting go of any self-consciousness, you’ll be able to perform your best and have fun with it!
