Kickboxing is an intense workout, but don’t let that intimidate you and keep you from trying it out. You don’t need any kickboxing experience before coming to Gritbox. Our workout is the perfect combination of high-intensity kickboxing and strength training packed into a high-energy, music-fueled class.

We caught up with Coach Kelly, from Gritbox Charleston, to debunk some of the common misconceptions about kickboxing.a member punches the kickboxing bag at Gritbox Charleston

Myth 1: I won’t be able to keep up

Don’t get me wrong, kickboxing is a hard workout. But I think a lot of people don’t realize that they can go at their own pace.

We make sure guests are set up for success before they even step into class. Each guest will go over the 6 core strikes that we throw during class with the coach who is leading their class.

Myth 2: I’ll look silly

Most people who come into Gritbox for the first time have never kickboxed or boxed a day in their life. Like most things that you try for the first time, you’re going to feel a little silly and things might not feel natural.

We keep the lights down low in the studio so that fear of someone watching you during class goes away faster than your right hook hitting the bag. Most people are so focused on their own punches and combos that they zone out and don’t even notice what their neighbors are doing.

Plus, we like to have fun around here. And we all look a little silly every now and then.

Myth 3: Kickboxing isn’t for me

Kickboxing is for any and every fitness level. There are so many physical and mental benefits to kickboxing. From boosting endurance and stamina to improving balance and coordination—the list goes on and on.

This is one of the reasons that it truly is for everyone! We even work with people fighting Parkinson’s disease through Rock Steady Boxing because of the positive impact that boxing has on brain health.
